BBQ and Brussels Sprouts

OK, so here I am. It's been almost three weeks and I am somewhat settled. I have explored the new neighborhood, joined a gym, taken the train to Brussels for the first time (to go to a job fair), found a shopping mall (with an H&M!), been to the post office (absentee ballot!), seen a live soccer match, met Andy's grandparents, been to a design expo (Interieur 08) and had lots of Italian coffees which are my new favorite thing.

It was sunny and nice for the first couple of weeks but now it is Winter. Gray skies, cold wind and light rain. And apparently it is going to get alot worse. But it is very cozy here so I am not freaking out just yet.

On my way out of the US I stopped to visit Quincy for a few days in New Orleans. We visited one of the plantations, Oak Alley:

We thought it was where Forest Gump was filmed but turns out that it's not.

We had a mint julep on the porch and then some BBQ on the way home:

We took the cable car (trolley, train, ?) to the French Quarter:

And saw a rainbow on the way home:

Quincy has a cute little apartment right off St. Charles (with relatives of Wynton Marsalis):

It was a lovely visit.

OK, switching gears. Andy sold the house that I stayed in when I was here in July so we are living in a new place now. The old house was in Rollegem, the new one is in Heule. The new house is actually more of a loft than a house. The bottom floor is going to be a showroom/meeting space for Andy's business and there is also a one-car garage that we are using as a laundry room and for storage, and the top floor is the loft. The windows on the far left are in the 'office' where I am sititng now and the windows on the far right are the bedroom. The three sets in between are the living room. It faces the back of a cathedral and small parking lot. The outside will be re-painted of course. There is still alot of work to be done both inside and out. But the view is amazing and the church bells are nice. Within walking distance we have two restaurants, a pub, two small groceries, two bakeries, the post office, the community swimming pool (indoor, of course), a spa and a small park with a pond and lots of ducks.

My first week here I took a little walk. On the right you can see the spire of the church:

And this turns out to be a giant field of brussels sprouts:

There are also horses, cows, a small donkey and a windmill in the vicinity but I have not been in picture taking mode lately. Maybe later. For now I am just trying to adjust.

Today I will be spending most of the day visiting websites for the employers that I talked with at the job fair and submitting my resume/applying for positions. Wish me luck!

Salud!
